SAT vs. ACT Reading: Understanding the Differences

By Steven Darby - November 27, 2023

We believe it's essential to understand the differences between the SAT and ACT reading sections to help your child navigate these exams successfully. Both tests assess reading comprehension skills but do so in slightly different ways.

The SAT Reading section consists of five passages, including one literature, two history/social studies, and two science passages. The questions primarily focus on evidence-based reasoning, analyzing the author's purpose, and understanding complex vocabulary in context. The SAT places a strong emphasis on critical thinking and analytical skills.

In contrast, the ACT Reading section consists of four passages, one each from prose fiction, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The questions in this section aim to evaluate your child's ability to interpret textual information, draw inferences, and identify main ideas. The ACT places more emphasis on straightforward comprehension and factual recall.

At Peak Learning Solutions, our teachers (we call ourselves teachers because we are all teachers first unlike most tutors and tutoring organizations) are well-versed in both the SAT and ACT reading sections. We will work closely with your child to adapt their strategies according to the specific demands of each exam. Our goal is to equip them with the necessary skills to excel in both tests, allowing them to showcase their abilities and achieve their best results.
