Academic Coaching vs. Tutoring: Which Does Your Child Need?

Academic Coaching vs. Tutoring: Which Does Your Child Need?

Parents often ask whether their child needs a tutor or a coach. They’re related, but they solve different problems.

Tutoring: help with the content

A tutor helps with a specific subject, like Algebra 2, chemistry, or an English paper. If your child understands the material in class but struggles with certain concepts, a tutor is likely a good fit.

Academic coaching: help with how to learn

A coach works on the skills underneath every class:

  • Organization and planning
  • Time management
  • Note-taking
  • Study techniques for tests and quizzes
  • Test-taking and problem-solving strategies
  • Goal setting and long-term assignments
  • Metacognition, or learning how to learn

Signs your child may need a coach

  • Late, missing, or lost assignments
  • “I studied for hours” followed by a disappointing grade
  • Overwhelm when a big project is assigned
  • Strong ability that doesn’t show up in grades
  • Constant reminders needed from you to get anything done

Signs your child may need a tutor

  • Specific topics don’t make sense even after effort
  • Grades dropped after a new, harder course
  • Your child asks for help but you can’t explain the material

Often, it’s both

Many students benefit from both. A student can fall behind in chemistry because of one tough unit, or because they never learned how to study for it. Coaching tackles the second problem, and tutoring tackles the first.
